On Thursdays I have a 3 hour break between classes, which doesn't make it worthwhile for me to drive home - just to turn around and drive back to Lowell again. Normally I sit and do homework inside the campus Starbucks but on this day I ventured out into downtown to get lunch at the local natural food/vegetarian restaurant Life Alive. I had been here once before, and I was a little turned off by the hippie sensory overload, but I was in a bad mood that day and my bad attitude is my own fault. After re-reading their menu I decided to give it a second try. I got there right before noon and it was dead quiet. I grabbed a table and nommed on "The Swami" which was carrots, tamari almonds, kale, raisins and pearl onions over brown rice with curry miso and nutritional yeast. I ordered a demi because I never finish my food - but I really regretted that because I cleaned my plate and wanted more. So yum
By the time I finshed my food, and sort of finished my homework it had gotten pretty busy/loud. Small groups of people lunching/chatting + reggae equals see ya later!
Lowell is a city that developed during the industrial era. The foundation of its development was the textile mills powerd by the Merrimack River that runs through the middle of Lowell. It's been many years now since those mills were in operation, and much of Lowell is run down. There are, however, a few blocks downtown of wonderful cobblestone streets where the city has been rejuvenated. Mills have been converted into restaurants, shops, galleries and loft apartments. It's a great place to walk around on a sunny afternoon.

My next destination was Found Lowell, a great "antique and artifact shop" on the same street as Life Alive. The second I walked in I was stopped in my tracks by a bookshelf full of vintage pyrex. I might steal this idea for my kitchen, I love the idea of having a bookshelf in every room - even if it's not for books.
So tempted to buy these beautiful jadeite coffe and tea cannisters, with the matching mixing bowls. Color inspiration for my kitchen walls perhaps?
I saw quite a few things I wanted, but alas I had no cash and it was time to get back to campus. The people who work here are very friendly and knowledgeable, and they don't pressure you into making a purchase. I'll definitely be back asap.
Lowell has a pretty good belly dancing scene also, its usually just too far for me to go out there for shows.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea you were into belly dancing until you mentioned it at dinner the other night! Is this a whole sub culture I am unaware of?
DeleteBoth of these places soun awesome. I want to go to the antique store!
